Safety Functions

If risk minimization cannot be achieved through design measures alone, then the use of safety-relevant control parts and a corresponding definition of safety functions is required. The appropriate safety functions are selected according to the application and required safeguard. The determination of safety-related functions and their implementation is fully described in the international standards EN ISO 13849 and IEC 62061.

The parts of machine control systems that handle safety tasks are defined in international standards as the “safety-related parts of control systems” (SRP/CS). These parts can consist of hardware or software and can be separate or integrated elements of the machine control system.

Safety-related parts of control systems each incorporate the entire functional chain of a safety function, consisting of the input level (sensor), the logic (safe signal processing), the output level (actuator) and the communication system between all control parts or sub-elements.
