Functional Safety Technology for Machine Building

A machine poses dangers to persons, machinery and the environment over the entire life cycle of a machine – from manufacture to dismantling. It is therefore vital that these dangers are identified already during the design phase of the machine and reduced with suitable measures.

The EC Machinery Safety Directive 2006/42/EC demands that there is no danger posed by machines. However, as there is no 100% safety in engineering, the aim is to reduce these dangers to a tolerable level of residual risk by means of risk reduction measures. The overall safety of a machine defines the state which is deemed to be free of unwarranted risks for persons or which is deemed to be danger free.

The functional safety is part of the overall safety of a system which depends on the correct functioning of the safety-related systems, other technology, safety-related systems and external risk reduction facilities.
